I first saw the idea of attaching crochet to canvas done by the super-creative Sarah-Jane Otton, who like me, is part of The Chain Gang, a craft group which meets in Dorchester each Wednesday.
Here’s how I made the canvas…
What you’ll need
- Blank canvas (mine measures 20cm x 20cm)
- Crochet hook (I used my trusty 4mm)
- Tapestry needle
What you need to do
Crochet as many little hearts as you’d like to appear on your canvas. I used the lovely tiny hearts pattern from The Party Artisan. I wanted a uniform pattern, so crocheted nine hearts (the image shows me at three!).
Using your ruler and then pencil (pencil’s best as you can rub the marks off), measure and mark the positions for your hearts on the canvas. Once you’re happy with where your hearts will go, using the tapestry needle, make a hole on each mark.
Take a heart, thread the two yarn ends through your needle and pull them through a hole to the back of the canvas. Tie two or three knots to secure the heart. Repeat this step until all of your hearts are in place. Snip off all of the excess yarn so you can’t see it from the front of the canvas.
Sit back and admire your work!
